Mohave deputies: Kingman man attacks with blowtorch, extinguisher

KINGMAN, AZ (CBS5) -

A Kingman man with two outstanding felony warrants could face more severe charges after Mohave County sheriff's deputies said he attacked them with a blow torch and fire extinguisher on Thursday.

Dauine James Hanson, 44, was arrested after deputies tried to subdue him twice with a stun gun. He gave up after deputies fired and hit him with pepper ball rounds.

Deputies went to a house about 9:20 p.m. in the 3500 block of Dove Lane to find Hanson because of the felony drug paraphernalia possession warrants and a misdemeanor warrant for nonpayment of child support, said Trish Carter of the sheriff's office.

Hanson was standing in front of the house, but walked away as deputies approached, leading them through a backyard filled with debris, Carter said.

Deputies found Hanson locked inside a storage shed with smoke coming from underneath the door, Carter said.

Deputies broke in and were confronted by Hanson holding a blowtorch. When he refused to drop it, a stun gun was fired, and he simply pulled the probes from his chest and continued to resist, Carter said.

Deputies fired a second stun gun that also was ineffective.

Hanson grabbed a fire extinguisher and started to put out a fire in the shed, but then turned it on deputies, impeding their vision and breathing and forcing them out of the shed, Carter said.

They then shot the pepper balls and hit Hanson, who eventually gave up and was taken into custody and to Kingman Regional Medical Center for treatment of injuries he suffered during the melee.

He was later booked into the Mohave County Jail on charges of aggravated assault on an officer, endangerment, arson of an occupied structure and resisting arrest, all felonies, Carter said.
