Saginaw County neighborhood gets makeover

BUENA VISTA TOWNSHIP, MI (WNEM) -

Homes in one Saginaw County neighborhood are getting a fresh makeover.

Habitat for Humanity is fixing up homes in Buena Vista, something that is sorely needed in some areas.

"Out here getting back involved with our community," said Steven Serrano, volunteer.

The Saginaw-Shiawassee Habitat for Humanity is on a fixing-spree.

They are painting walls, installing windows, and doing repairs on 24 homes in the Saginaw County community this week.

"Homeowners are really tickled we've come to the door. It's not that they don't want to fix their houses, it's that they aren't able to afford to," said Cameron Brady, executive director of the Saginaw-Shiawassee Habitat for Humanity.

The homes they are working on belong to low income residents, but they chose people who also have the ability to give back to the habitat with what they call sweat equity.

The impact is greater than the 24 houses they are working on this week. Others in the area are taking notice and sparking some revitalization in the neighborhoods.

"Actually each of the last four to five years, at least one neighbor has applauded the workers as they walk down the road to do work," Brady said.

The idea of changing the image of some Buena Vista Township neighborhoods through good works was something that volunteers said drove them to help.

"Overall just a great feeling. It's just rewarding coming out here and do work and help out those who need help," Serrano said.

In the end, those from the habitat said, change can happen.

"Understand something can be done, and something is being done," Brady said.
