Midland police warn of summer upswing in thefts

MIDLAND, MI (WNEM) -

Midland police warn of a summer upswing in thefts from vehicles.

"It's something you need to be aware of, unfortunately thieves are criminals of opportunity. They're looking for the easy opportunity to get stuff that they can steal or sell," Midland police officer Dan Keeler said. "Every summer we have a little bit of an upswing in larceny from vehicles."

Law enforcement officers said the easiest and most obvious way to not become a victim is to make sure you lock your car.

"If you park your car in a garage put it in the garage and actually close the door ... It's amazing how many times cars are put in garages with the doors left wide open all night," Keeler said.

Some residents said where they grew up that's just what you did.

"I was raised down state, Detroit area. So it was a habit never changed it," Terry Kubiski said.

Although thefts from vehicles are more common during the summer, Midland police are not issuing a warning about any specific theft spree at this time.
