Residents celebrate new road

Posted: Updated:
MIDLAND COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

Years of frustration and persistence is finally paying off for people in one Mid-Michigan community.

TV5 first told you about Shaffer Road in Edenville Township last summer.

The road was pulverized, but never sealed and neighbors said they've been suffering from health issues ever since.

"We were told many times that we wouldn't get this road paved. But we didn't accept that," Steve Harnick said.

It's been a long time coming, five years residents said, but Friday the people on Shaffer watched as the road they demanded finally got paved.

"We can take walks down our road now without choking on dust," Harnick said.

Before they could clear away the dust they had to kick up some dust with their local officials.

Initially the township board voted against paving about a one mile stretch of road on Shaffer, even though residents had been complaining that the dust was causing health issues.

On Shaffer Road about 4 inches of asphalt covers the road that neighbors said was causing toxic dust.

"Thank you TV5 for caring about our community," Mike Weaver said.

Friday afternoon residents celebrated with a block party and barbeque.

"After five years of having dust everywhere, having this paved is going to be fabulous," Weaver said.
