FLINT, MI (WNEM) -

The CANUSA Games kicked off in Flint on Friday. WNEM-TV5 caught some of the action at a hockey game at the newly renovated Crystal Fieldhouse.

The three-day sports tournament between Hamilton, Ontario, Canada and sister city Flint, MI, started in 1958 with 200 athletes and seven sports. Today, the Games boast more than 1,400 athletes and 16 sports.

Coaches told WNEM-TV5 the CANUSA Games are about more than just the athletics, but making friendships and memories, too.

Jim Cokley, owner of Crystal Fieldhouse, said he is delighted to welcome the athletes and their parents, adding it makes the efforts to renovate and reopen the ice arena worthwhile.

Crystal Fieldhouse will hold its public grand reopening Sept. 7 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

The CANUSA Games will be held all weekend with a closing ceremony Sunday.
