Bay City officials search for water main leak

Posted: Updated:

Bay City officials have been searching for the source of the water main leak since Saturday night.

"We're talking about a large amount of water and normally something of that size you can locate rather quickly and we just haven't been able to so at this point," said Dave Harran, Public Works director for Bay City.

He said one area they're searching, the water main crossings under the river, would be one of the worst case scenarios.

"That's a whole nother ball game at this point, we are just hoping to isolate the crossing if it is the problem," Harran said.

The problem was first discovered around noon Saturday.

Until the leak is located and fixed, residents are being asked to avoid doing things that require a lot of water, such as watering their lawn or washing their car, to conserve the water supply.

"Go ahead and drink the water, still healthy to do. Flush the toilet, those things are important and they should continue to do so," Harran said.

Harran said that could change if they can't find the leak.

"If we don't locate this leak within the next day or so, we could be looking at more severe water restrictions or water use restrictions," Harran said.
