Two men arrested in connection to 9 stolen guns

Posted: Updated:

Five assault rifles and four semi-automatic handguns were recovered nearly 200 miles away from where they were stolen.

Two men were in jail Friday night after they were captured less than 12 hours after the burglary.

Deputies were called to a break-in at Shooters Indoor Gun Range in Traverse City on Friday morning. They discovered nine guns had been stolen.

During the investigation deputies were able to identify two suspects, one of whom lives in Davison Township.

That's when they contacted the Genesee County Sheriff.

"They called us shortly before 6 a.m. (Friday) morning, gave us the names of the suspects, and asked us if we could try to run them down and try to find out where they are," Sheriff Robert Pickell said.

Police arrived at a home near M-15 and Bristol Road in the cover of darkness and found a vehicle matching a description given. A deputy creept up on the home and spotted the evidence they were looking for.

"Kind of walked around to the garage, and peered into the window, and saw the two suspects holding assault rifles," Pickell said.

The two suspects were arrested. Trevor Manning, 20, of Davison, and Brandon Miller, 21, of Traverse City were both charged with three counts of receiving and concealing stolen firearms and one count of felony firearms.

"I thought maybe a drug bust, but it was guns, that's scary," said David Urch, Davison Township resident.

Pickell said it's not clear what they planned to do with the guns, but he said in many cases they're sold and become a danger to the community.

"They're not used to hunt deer, they're used to hurt people, they're used to kill people, they're used to rob people, and hopefully we are able to, of course get these guns off the street, but protect somebody, some unsuspected person," Pickell said.

The two men will face charges locally and in Grand Traverse County.
