Mom charged after teen son partakes in 'fire challenge'

Posted: Updated:
CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -

A Charlotte woman has been arrested after she is accused of allowing her teenage son to take part in a "fire challenge" that recently became popular on social media.

The challenge has teenagers pouring flammable material on their bodies and setting themselves on fire.

Forty-one-year-old Janie Lachelle Talley was arrested last week and charged with contributing to the delinquency of a juvenile.

According to police, her 16-year-son attempted to participate in the fire challenge late last month.

Detectives viewed the video that was later posted online. It showed him pour fingernail polish remover on his body and set himself on fire.

Other people were nearby and put out the fire. Her son sustained minor burns to his chest and neck area.

Talley was present and aware of what her son doing, according to police, and even facilitated the recording.

"All I know... it was a silly, silly decision for him to make...and I mean it happened and we're working through it right now," Talley told WBTV.

Investigators got a warrant for Talley and arrested her on August 6. She was charged with contributing to the delinquency of a juvenile.

"Facebook has recognized the danger in this activity and has removed similar online videos from their site to avoid any copycat videos," police officials said. "The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department discourages this activity due to the extreme danger it poses to everyone involved and take all complaints seriously."

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600 or visit the Crime Stoppers mobile app website at http://charlottecrimestoppers.com/.
