Local police chief leaving for another post in Mid-Michigan

Posted: Updated:

Saginaw Police Chief Brian Lipe is leaving the city and heading south to Grand Blanc.

Grand Blanc City Manager Paul Brake announced today that Lipe has been appointed to the position of chief of police. That follows the retirement of Chief of Police Steven Solomon in April.

Lipe is expected to begin work in mid-September, although it's unclear when his last day with the city of Saginaw will be.

Lipe began his career as a police officer with the Saginaw Police Department in 1994. He was promoted to the rank of sergeant in 2001, lieutenant in 2007 and deputy chief in 2012. He served as interim chief and moved into the permanent position in May 2013.

Lipe will become the fifth chief in the history of the Grand Blanc City Police Department.

Below is a message from Chief Lipe to the community:

Thank you everyone for the well wishes and congratulations. It seems like this has all taken place very quickly. I would like to say that I feel nothing but joy, but that is not the case. I, like many of my colleagues here at the SPD, have put in a lot of hard work to make a difference in the City of Saginaw. In the last twenty years, many of my co-workers and I have cried tears of joy, tears of pain and nursed many injuries suffered in the course of performing this job that we love so much. I have many stories about calls I have been on or situations that I have been in that would make you laugh, cry and/or cringe. Many of you posting on my timeline are an integral part of those memories/stories.

The Saginaw Police Department has so many great officers who are making a difference each and every day. With so few officers on duty each day and so many calls coming in and cases to investigate, I honestly don't know how they do it. But, they are amazing people trying their best to address crimes and issues that effect the citizens in this community.

I have had the pleasure, especially over the course of the last few years, to meet so many wonderful people who are doing wonderful things on their own to make Saginaw a great place. The citizens who are active in their Neighborhood Associations are such passionate, wonderful people who have made a huge difference here in Saginaw. The business leaders and civic organizations have been great to work with in getting our city headed in the right direction.

The City Manager and his management team are awesome people making a difference with a very limited amount of resources as well.

With all of this hard work being put in by everyone, I see the positive change here in Saginaw, especially in downtown and old town Saginaw.

After 20+ years here, there will always be a part of me in Saginaw. In May of this year, I saw a posting for a position that I immediately knew I should apply for. My extended family has lived in Grand Blanc for many years and I knew that the Grand Blanc community would be a great place to live and work for my family and I. I am very grateful, humbled and honored to have been offered this position. I will work hard over the course of the next month to get loose ends tied up here in Saginaw. With sadness next month, I will leave a job and a city that I have loved for a lot of years as I look forward, with excitement, to the new career awaiting me in Grand Blanc.
