Back to the Bricks open house kicks off

Posted: Updated:

The Flint assembly General Motors plant gave tours of its production on Tuesday, kicking off the Back to the Bricks event.

"There really is a fascination with how things are made. You watch TV and there's shows about how things are made and cars top the list," said Tom Wickham, spokesman for GM in Flint.

The Flint assembly GM plant opened its doors and gave tours for Back to the Bricks.

"People want to know what powers it and like to see the size and sheer mass of parts coming together and people building it. There's a lot of pride when you see things made in America and here in Flint," Wickham said.

"Well, we get a lot of questions, a lot of people who want to tour the plant. Unfortunately, we can't do that on a regular basis because it is a working manufacturing facility," Wickham said.

So they thought, what better time to do it than to kick off for Back to the Bricks.

Many of the visitors said it was a great way to remember what Vehicle City stands for, and lead into a great week of classic car excitement downtown.

"Well it's a perfect fit. Back to the Bricks and General Motors. All the history in this town that inspired automotive manufacturing around the world so we tie it in with Back to the Bricks," Wickham said.

Seeing work being done right here in Michigan, in Flint, comes with a great deal of pride.

"Well there's a lot of excitement from the people. We are the best truck builders in the world," said Barry Campbell, chairman at Flint assembly.
