Mid-Michigan school uses year-round schedule

Posted: Updated:

Those long summer vacations for students could soon be a thing of the past.

One Mid-Michigan school district already uses the year-round approach and it has one local lawmaker sold.

"It's just moved over a 12-month calendar instead of a 10-month calendar," said Josha Talison, superintendent of Beecher Community Schools.

Everyone seems to be loving it. The superintendent said the Beecher school district has long been known for athletic achievement and now it's also known for its so-called year-round school program. There are the same number of instruction days and the same number of vacation days as they're used to.

"Your eliminating that concept of summer learning loss. So students are able to continually grow academically and they are able to retain what was taught the previous year, so they can spring forward and keep moving forward academically," Talison said.

The Beecher district started their school year a couple of days ago. It's their second year with the balanced calendar and they said they're already seeing improvements in MEAP scores.

Congressman Dan Kildee toured the district Thursday morning.

"I think this may be one of the keys to unlocking academic success. Especially in urban communities. So I'm glad Beecher is doing this and I hope we can learn a lot from it and maybe expand it to other districts," Kildee said.

Students like the new schedule too.

"It's actually better that way, because it helps you stay focused on school more because school is first and then other things are later on," said Mario Morales, a freshman.

Talison hopes with the test score improvements, his district can be known for academics as well as athletics.

The superintendent said other districts have contacted him, all wanting to know how it's working.
