$2.2 million worth of opium seized in Barrow County

Posted: Updated:

Sheriff's deputies in Barrow County were able to get a hold of more than 5,500 grams of opium before it could be used to make heroin.

The illegal drugs, which were packaged in more than 200 individual packets, have a street value of about $2.2 million.

Deputies seized the drugs during a search of a home on the 300 block of Oak Ridge in Auburn.

It was part of a "controlled delivery" where deputies were alerted by the Department of Homeland Security of a suspicious package being sent to the home in Barrow County. The package was sent from a province in Laos.

U.S. Customs and Border Patrol agents determined the package contained an illegal substance during a scan in Chicago.

Deputies arrested and charged a woman at the residence in connection to the crime. They say De Yang, 38, accepted the package. She is now charged with possession of opium, intent to distribute opium and trafficking in opium.

Yang is being held in jail without bond.
