Motorcyclist hits horse on highway

SAGINAW COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

A Mid-Michigan motorcyclist struck an animal in the road, making it the fourth such accident in the past week.

The latest incident happened early Monday morning along M-52, when a man riding a motorcycle struck a horse as it crossed the road.

"Nights are always a challenge and you have to be careful," Saginaw County Sheriff William Federspiel said. "Riding at dusk, riding at night. You got to pay a little closer attention to what's going on around you."

At least two motorcycle drivers recently died following accidents with animals in Saginaw County.

"We did have a female riding a motorcycle. A dog ran out in front of her motorcycle, she struck the animal. The animal was killed, she was thrown from the motorcycle. She later died at the hospital," Federspiel said.

The sheriff said a motorcycle was involved in a bike and deer accident early Saturday morning on Iva Road in western Saginaw County. The driver was killed and then there was another accident Monday morning.

"He was north bound on M-52 and struck a horse that was standing in the road or had meandered into the middle of the road," Federspiel said.

The horse and motorcycle accident left both the rider and the horse with only a few cuts and bruises.

"The rider of the motorcycle was wearing a helmet and suffered minor injuries. And the horse was determined to have sustained minor injuries as well," Federspiel said.

Whether you're in a car or on a bike, if an animal runs out in front of you, you still have that same split second of time to make a decision, and riders said that's when experience comes into play.

"One of the thing's we've seen in inexperienced riders is panic and grab the front brake only on a motorcycle and obviously leads to less control. More experienced riders use both brakes which is what they're intended for," Ron Flore said.

Both the sheriff and Flore said if you're going to ride at night use a little extra caution.

The sheriff said the two motorcyclists that died in those animal accidents were not wearing helmets.
