BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) -

Brunswick County School officials are awaiting final lab results before moving forward with a plan to address the coal ash found on South Brunswick Middle School's baseball field earlier this year.

Coal ash is the waste left from burning coal, and contains heavy metals like mercury, arsenic and lead.

According to officials, after the results come in, a consultant will then prepare a remedial action plan. A likely solution will be to leave the soil and put a deed restriction on areas of fill.

Ultimately, the North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources will make the final decision on what to do with the field.

There are currently 2,000 tons of stockpile soil from earlier tests located behind the storage building near South Brunswick Middle School. The stockpile will be moved at a cost of more than $200,000.

"Parents need to know that the district will always put the safety of staff and students first," explained Craig C. Eckert, Director of Capital Projects and Planning for Brunswick County Schools. "We've restricted use of the field. We are planning to put an overlay of 1 foot of soil on top of the existing field just to ensure that the fields are safe. "

Students are still not allowed on the field since it was closed last October.
