Covenant's renovations are complete

Renovations are now complete at the Covenant Emergency Care Center.

Those improvements are expected to make doctors better equipped to handle emergencies and keep residents healthy.

Covenant's newly expanded emergency care center is now open for the business of health care.

"We been kind of enduring the construction phase in one of Michigan's coldest winters ever and to now have all these rooms and this space it's wonderful," said Dr. Matthew Deibel, medical director for the center.

He said limited space in the old facility made treating patients a challenge at times.

"We were working out 47 rooms before and occasionally had to see people in the hallway and now with these 18 new rooms all private we now have a total of 65 private rooms to take care of patients," he said.

More than 85,000 patients make a trip to this emergency room each year, making it one of the busiest facilities in the country.

"These last few Mondays we have been hitting about 300 patients a day and so we are using everyone of these rooms right now," Deibel said.

Most of the rooms are in the pediatric area. Director of nursing Heather Singleton said it was built to best meet the needs the hospital's smallest patients.

"A nurse can be sitting in the middle of the nurses station and can pretty much see every room in our entire pediatrics department," Singleton said.

Singleton said the expansion, a $6.5 million project, shows Covenant is committed to taking care of those in need.

"We are finally able to serve our community and serve the needs of the community. We are able to hopefully get patients out of hallway beds and into private rooms," she said.
