Escalator accident severs 2-year-old boy's fingers

TIGARD, OR (KPTV) -

A 2-year-old boy is recovering after two of his fingers were severed by an escalator at the Washington Square Mall.

Tualatin Valley Fire and Rescue says the boy lost his fingers just before 6 p.m. Wednesday near the food court.

According to a state report on the accident, the child fell while running up the down escalator.

The toddler "got his fingers caught in grated steps, and mother pulled child up to free him, resulting in the severance of his two middle fingers," the report read.

Mall security gave the boy first aid until paramedics arrived.

"I was sitting at work and I heard screaming," said Danielle Dankenbring, who works at the mall. "I look over and I see this little boy and I saw a bit of blood on the floor and I was like, 'Oh my God, what just happened?'"

The severed fingers were recovered, but it's unknown if doctors were able to reattach them.

The toddler was taken to a local hospital.

The escalator was taken out of service until the elevator maintenance company and the state Department of Consumer and Business Services inspected it. It was reopened Thursday afternoon.
