No hand washing after touching used straws

Posted: Updated:

No matter where you touch a used straw, it could have bacteria at the top where someone put their mouth on it, or anywhere from inside the drink. That's why the Health Department wrote up a restaurant worker for touching used straws and dirty dishes, then returning to food service without washing their hands.

It happened at Quaker Steak and Lube at 8000 West Broad Street in Henrico. In fact, Quaker had 9 critical violations.

We talked with the manager, who told us they fired their kitchen manager after that inspection, saying, "That's how serious we took it."

The report shows some violations were corrected during the inspection. Quaker had one critical violation on its check-up report. The manager told us all violations have been fixed and they've moved in a better direction.

Albert Pizzeria at 7524 Forest Hill Avenue in Richmond had 4 critical violations, including that lasagna, turkey, meat balls, cheese, and ham in the sandwich prep unit weren't being kept cold enough. The report says that and other problems were fixed on the spot.

This week's NBC12 Hall of Fame Award goes to FeedMore's Community Kitchen, which has been acing health inspections with perfect scores, while making nutritious meals for children and seniors in need.

Said the Community Kitchen's Food Production Manager Amory James, "We serve the Meals on Wheels clients, we also serve the kids program, which is called the Kids' Cafe, during the school year."

James leads a team of 12 staff members, plus 15 to 40 volunteers, who make sure everything is clean and prepared correctly.

"They buy into the mission," explained James. "We take pride in the fact that we got funds from the community to build this place, so we want to take care of it."
