One school hiring, one school firing

FLINT, MI (WNEM) -

Two Mid-Michigan school districts are heading in very different directions.

While one district is bringing back more than 50 laid off teachers, another is giving them pink slips.

Brenda Mahan, school cafeteria worker, just found out she's been rehired, after being laid off by the district during the last school year.

"Didn't know if we were going to have a job or not and the paper came in Saturday. I was so happy," she said.

The district announced it is calling back 52 teachers and staff who previously received pink slips.

"I hope the ones they call back are the ones that really need the job and the money," Mahan said.

School Board President Isaiah Oliver said the re-hirings fall in line with the district's deficit elimination plan.

"We looked at our budget and our DEP and looked at the number of students we are projecting to bring back and used those numbers to predict how many teachers we need to have," Oliver said.

Most people said it's good news for the district, but it's another story over at Bridgeport-Spaulding schools, where union reps confirmed 10 teachers have been laid off this week.

The district's union president said he was told by administrators the decision was based on economic reasons.

Both school districts are facing multi-million dollar budget deficits.
