Experts reveal why hundreds of dead fish washed ashore

The Department of Land and Natural Resources has released the results of a study to determine why so many fish washed ashore and died last month on Oahu's west and south shores.

The fish were mostly juvenile flying gurnards. Beachgoers found hundreds of the fish on the sand.

Federal scientists tested the fish and found no evidence of illness or pollutants. Their conclusion is that the fish were in a vulnerable life stage -- the transition between juveniles and adults -- and likely got accidentally washed ashore.

Wildlife officials say a similar event happened on Oahu ten years ago.
