SAGINAW, MI (WNEM) -

As parents and students are gearing up for a new school year, some local teachers are also preparing for some smaller paychecks.

Teachers in the Saginaw school district approved a new contract on Monday and it comes with some cuts.

Union leaders say two-thirds of Saginaw school teachers voted to accept about 9 percent in cuts. They say its not what they wanted to do, but what needed to be done.

Teachers will take an additional six percent cut to their wages on top of the 3 percent cuts already in place.

The cuts are part of the district's deficit elimination plan. The Saginaw school district face a more than 7-million dollar deficit. The cuts will be in place for at least the next two years.

Classes begin in Saginaw on Tuesday.

At the meeting Monday night, the school board also approved its food service contract with Sodexo Magic.
