ONTARIO, OR (KPTV) -

A man driving a stolen car in eastern Oregon slammed into a semi, got out of his car, went into the truck and stabbed the driver multiple times for no apparent reason, according to Oregon State Police.

It happened shortly after noon Monday on Interstate 84 about 15 miles west of Ontario.

Police said a commercial truck pulling two tanker trailers filled with milk was heading east on the highway when a Buick Lacrosse with Washington plates began ramming into it.

Investigators described the driver's actions as "unprovoked."

The truck driver, identified as 63-year-old Charles Vanzante of Jerome, ID, pulled over to the side of the road and stopped. Police said the driver of the Buick then stopped his car against the side of the truck, got out and entered the semi.

He then stabbed Vanzante multiple times before running off up nearby a hill, troopers said. However, he then returned to the scene and again fought with Vanzante.

At that point, police said several people surrounded the suspect and convinced him to stay as OSP troopers began arriving at the scene.

Police took the suspect, identified as Dustin Rotter, 28, into custody at gunpoint. His last known address was Modesto, CA.

A knife was recovered at the scene.

Investigators determined the car Rotter was driving had been stolen during a carjacking in Pasco, WA on Aug. 24.

Rotter is facing charges of attempted murder, assault, reckless driving, recklessly endangering another person and criminal mischief. Additional charges are pending, as well, police said.

Vanzante was flown to a Boise, ID hospital. He was stabbed multiple times in the chest and stomach. His injuries, while serious, are not believed to be life-threatening, according to police.
