Police: Sex abuse suspect left note on victim's door 10 days after attack

Posted: Updated:

Beaverton police said an apology note left on a victim's apartment door by a sexual assault suspect allowed detectives to identify and arrest him.

Cruz Bonilla, of Hillsboro, is being held at the Washington County Jail on charges of burglary, sex abuse and sodomy.

Police said Bonilla entered a woman's apartment through an unlocked door and then sexually assaulted the 39-year-old victim.

Bonilla fled after the assault, which took place at the Center Pointe Apartments near Southwest 153rd Avenue and Millikan Way in the early morning hours of Aug. 15.

"I'm pretty shocked, it's a pretty quiet apartment complex. Everyone seems to be pretty friendly. Something like that is definitely cause for alarm," tenant David Sluga said.  "It's horrible, horrible."

Officers searched the area and found no sign of Bonilla, but detectives worked with the victim in the days that followed.

On Aug. 25, Bonilla appeared to return to the scene of the crime. He left a note on the victim's apartment door, officers said. The handwritten note said, "I hope you don't hate me," and listed Bonilla's phone number on it.

That's all police needed to track down Bonilla, who they said admitted there "wasn't consent" on both sides.

"Too little too late," Sluga added.  "He shouldn't have done anything like that in the first place."

Police said the victim did not know Bonilla and there was no connection between them prior to the assault.

During an interview with police, Bonilla admitted to feeling guilty and that's why he returned to post a note on the victim's door.

Records show Bonilla was convicted of prostitution in 2005 and theft in 2006.

Nobody at Bonilla's Hillsboro home wanted to comment.
