Severe storm threat for Labor Day

Posted: Updated:

Our Labor Day started with areas of fog, but otherwise partly cloudy and dry. However, an approaching cold front will bring us active weather this afternoon through tonight.

Southwesterly wind today will usher in warm and humid air. With the heat and moisture, the atmosphere will be rather unstable. As the cold front approaches, we will see showers and thunderstorms move into Mid-Michigan.

Some storms have the potential to be strong, or even reach severe criteria. Damaging wind will be the primary threat today, with large hail possible as well.

This is an issue today because of the holiday - many have plans to be outside. Your best bet for enjoying outdoor activities today will be before lunch, as storms will arrive after noon, mainly from west to east.

Keep an eye to the sky and on the radar today, and be prepared to take action should a storm move into your area. Remember that if you can hear thunder, you are close enough to be struck by lightning.

Keep up to date with the storms on our First Warn 5 Pinpoint Doppler radar.

Check in with TV5 throughout the day on-air and online for updates.
