PHOENIX (CBS5) -

Phoenix police have identified the heavily-armed man who was shot and killed after he fired at officers and a police helicopter Monday night.

A police spokesman on Wednesday said 55-year-old Richard Ray Aceves was killed when officers returned fire while he stood on his front porch with several loaded weapons.

Officer James Holmes said police were still searching for a motive Wednesday morning and that the only contact police have had with Aceves was as a witness or a victim. Holmes didn't go into greater detail.

Several residents reported hearing gunshots in the neighborhood near 15th Avenue and Bethany Home Road and when two officers arrived about 10:15 p.m., they said they heard a loud boom and approached a home where they believed it came from, Phoenix police Officer James Holmes said.

As they approached the house, they saw a woman come toward the door and then someone at a house across the street started firing, Holmes said.

Officers took cover near a pickup truck and the suspect also fired at a Phoenix police helicopter overhead that had shined a spotlight on him, Holmes said.

Two officers from one of the department's K-9 units positioned on the top of a house across the street fired and struck the suspect several times after he fired at the helicopter. He died at the scene, Holmes said.

Holmes said officers found two other loaded rifles and two handguns on the suspect's porch, all within the man's reach and ready to be fired.

Neighbor Jeannie Serdar said she heard four shots, "Then I heard one shot that sounded much closer and then within five or 10 minutes, I heard six, I think, gunshots."

Trent Brown said he and others were watching a scary movie and "kind of didn't know if the gunshots were at first part of the movie or outside."

"So after we heard the six consecutive shots later we got up and started taking a look," Brown said.

Holmes said police did not know a lot about the suspect, didn't have a motive and that the investigation continues.

"We're looking for anything to tell us why he did this," Holmes said.

The suspect's identity was not released.

There have been more than 30 officer-involved shootings in the Valley since January.
