BAY CITY, MI (WNEM) -

Emotions ran high as family and friends of the victim and defendant waited patiently for a verdict.

The jury of twelve, which was comprised of mostly women, began deliberating at about 8:30 a.m. Thursday morning.

After hours of deliberation, the jury found Peter Heagany not guilty in the murder of Brian Charbonneau.

Heagany has been convicted of voluntary manslaughter, a felony punishable by up to 15 years in prison. Heagany has also been found guilty of felony firearms, which carries a sentence of up to two years in prison.

Peter Heagany was charged in connection with the shooting death of his former roommate and lover Brian Charbonneau, back in February.

During closing arguments Wednesday, Heagany's defense attorney Matthew Reyes argued that his client acted in self-defense.

The prosecution laid out their case of why they felt Heagany killed in cold blood.

During testimony last week, investigators read hundreds of text messages that revealed what may have happened in the days leading up to Charbonneau's death.

In one exchange, Heagany's girlfriend demanded he end his relationship with Charbonneau or she would leave him.

This was a major sticking point for the prosecution. They believe those text messages showed motive. They also picked apart Heagany's initial interview with police.

Heagany told investigators he fell asleep for hours after he shot his former boyfriend.

There was also some question about what Heagany initially told police as it relates to the gun and where he was standing in the room.

In closing arguments, defense attorney Reyes said his client never said what the prosecutor alleged.

Heagany will be sentenced October 20.
