Deadly hit-and-run victim's mother speaks after new details emerge

Relief nearly a year in the making for a local family. Three people have now been charged in the hit-and-run death of Jeffrey Lee last fall in Flint.

"Tell him I love him, and I miss him, and that's what I do," Brenda Miracle said at the Gilford Township Cemetery Thursday night.

Brenda Miracle finds peace at her son's grave site, where she can see his face, and talk to him as though he's still here.

"He just had a birthday in June, he would have been 35. That was a tough day," said Miracle.

Lee was hit by a pick-up truck and killed outside the Fraternal Order of Eagles Club on Dort Highway in Flint last September. The father of three was there for a wedding reception. Police have been searching for the person responsible for more than 11 months.

Finally this week, the Michigan State's Attorney General laid out charges against three family members. The attorney general said 26-year-old Scott Gunn allegedly hit Lee and drove off.  The AG said Gunn's parents, Sherry Long and Leon Gunn, helped cover it up. Maybe most shocking, Long is a crime victims' advocate with the Genesee County Prosecutor's Office. She's also accused of swaying witnesses from speaking with police.

"I want them to be locked up, for a long time. Long," said Miracle.

But she knows no amount of time behind bars will bring her son back.

"It's comforting, but, comforting, but sad, because he didn't have to die like that," said Miracle.

While the wheels of justice continue to do their work, she'll continue to seek her own peace at her son's side.

Sherry Long has since been suspended from her job at the Genesee County Prosecutor's Office. Each of the family members is facing a felony or more. Scott Gunn, the driver, who was arraigned Thursday, charged with failure to stop at a scene of an accident when at fault resulting in death, which is punishable by up to 15 years in prison.
