Woman, 9 months pregnant, chases purse snatcher; goes into labor

A criminal went about as low as you can go on Flint's east end.

On Sept. 11, police tell TV5 30-year old Mark Newton snatched a woman's purse.  But he had no idea that he was picking on the wrong woman.

"Adrenaline more than anything, yup," laughed Kristen Thompson.

His intended "easy" victim was Thompson.  Thompson was in the Kroger parking lot near the corner of Franklin and Davison in Flint when she said Newton made his move.

"He snatched my purse, so I went after him," Thompson said.

And she caught him, but that's when he knocked her down.

"When I got up, I knew I was going into labor, because I was having contractions, and they were really, really bad," Thompson said.

Thompson was nine months pregnant when this happemed, chasing down a bad guy, determined not let him get away.

So, she got up and chased him again and yelled for help.  Luckily some friends of hers were nearby.  They intervened, Thompson got her purse back, and Newton landed in jail, sporting a roughed up mug.

But the excitement was far from over for Thompson. Just a couple of hours after the robbery, she gave birth to a baby boy.

"He is one miracle, thank God he is still alive," Thompson said.

On Wednesday, 6-day-old Joseph Thompson and mom were doing just fine. Perhaps Baby Joseph's first lesson in life? He's got one tough mom!

"I'm that chick that will just go after and get what's mine back," she said.

Newton was arrested and charged for unarmed robbery. One of Thompson's family members held Newton down until police arrived.
