11-year-old raises money to change the world

OWOSSO, MI (WNEM) -  Good things certainly do come in small packages and a Mid-Michigan boy is proving it.

Calvin Cody has raised more than $3,000 to help those in need and thousands of miles away.

Calvin isn't your typical 11 year old. This Owosso sixth grader is already trying to change the world.

During a missionary trip in Guatemala, Calvin met many kids his age, but their lives looked nothing like his. He said the conditions they were living  nearly brought him to tears.

"They're sick all the time and they're not able to stay healthy and be able to do all the things that we can," he said.

After the trip Calvin came to his mother with an idea that wasn't all that typical.

"I told my mom that we should raise money for them to have clean water filters," he said.

His mom wasn't OK with emptying out Calvin's college fund, so he decided to make bags, bookmarkers and other items that he could sell to raise money.

Calvin said the idea came to him because he wanted to be the change needed in his community.

He has already raised $3,000, which will buy clean water filters for an entire school.

"He's become extremely focused on this," said Fred Beach, executive director for Reach Out Ministries.

Beach said Calvin's generosity is truly having an impact.

"He's making a difference, not only with children, but with adults who say if he's doing this, so can I," Beach said.

Calvin said he hopes to visit Guatemala again and make the missionary effort a yearly tradition.
