BAY CITY, MI (WNEM) -

A Mid-Michigan teacher accused of having sexual relations with multiple high school students admitted to the crimes committed four years ago.

Heidi Lewis pleaded guilty to having sexual contact with students, and that plea comes just a day before jury selection was scheduled to begin.

Lewis was a teacher at Bay City Central High School back in 2010.

Lewis was all set to begin her third trial in a Bay County courtroom, prepared to fight the criminal sexual conduct charges she was facing. But in a few short minutes, it all changed.

"This has been a long process for us. This is a case that has taken close to four years," said Jordan Case, assistant prosecutor.

The former substitute teacher accepted a plea deal on Tuesday admitting her guilt. She said she had sexual contact with three high school students. It happened back in June of 2010. As a result of the agreement, all other charges against Lewis were dropped.

"This was a way that we can hold the defendant accountable for what she did and for her bad actions, and at the same time provide some closure to victims and move on and not put them through the trial and all the things that surround the trial," Case said.

Even though Lewis could be sentenced to up to a year in prison, compared to the 15 years she was facing before, Case still calls this plea agreement a good deal.

"Michigan uses sentencing guidelines and even if we had gone to trial and convicted her of that 15 years in prison, what she would actually do in terms of a sentence is much less than that. It's maybe 10 percent of that," Case said.

It's not just jail time. Lewis' days as an educator are over.

"The defendant in this case will not be allowed to teach anymore. She will not be back in the classroom. She will be on the sex offender registry and she will have a term of probation. So we've protected future victims in this resolution as well," Case said.

Lewis declined comment. She will be sentenced in November.
