Woman reaches out for help with leaky home

Posted: Updated:
ESSEXVILLE, MI (WNEM) -

It's a situation nobody hopes to end up in, but it happens all too often.

A Mid-Michigan woman is living in a home that is on its last leg.

Sandra Steiner reached out to TV5 for help and with the support of the community there might be a glimmer of hope in her pursuit to save her home.

"I just don't know what else to do," Steiner said.

Steiner lives with just herself and her beloved cats. She's on disability and lives on very little each month. Now her home is falling apart.

"This is something that's way beyond what I can do for myself," Steiner said.

A window on Steiner's house is leaking.

She's tried to insulate it herself, but that's when she realized the problem was bigger than she thought.

The problem now is too big for an easy fix. It has damaged the window, walls and floor.

"From the wall, the window, all the way down, this is what the floor is like now, and it's gotten so much work," she said.

Steiner called the department of human services and they said they'd pay for it as long as she could find a licensed contractor to do the work.

She called contractor after contractor to find something that could fix the window problem, but none of them said they would work on a mobile home.

"It was like I was left out all alone and I didn't know what to do. There were a lot of times I just had to sit and cry," Steiner said.

She reached out to the TV5 Rescue Squad for some help to hopefully find a way to save her home.

"This is my home, this my sanctuary, this is all I have. I'm afraid if mold gets in there or what, I'll have to leave, and I have nowhere else to go," Steiner said.
