FREELAND, MI (WNEM) -

An inmate was sentenced to life in prison for attempting to murder a corrections officer.

Daniel Derda was sentenced on June 22 for his attack on Kevin Ott in 2014.

Kevin Ott was a corrections officer at the Saginaw Correctional Facility in Freeland at the time of the attack.

Family members of Ott said a shortage of staffing at the facility is to blame for the attack.

"It is getting scary in there. We are short staffed. Inmates are a whole other breed. It's just off the hook what we call it. It's scary as heck," Kevin's brother Paul Ott said after the attack.

William Henderson, with the Michigan Corrections Organization, said staff, especially for Level 2 inmates at the facility, has been cut drastically. He said the situation is putting officers in a vulnerable position.
