Ill mother seeks donations for double lung transplant

Posted: Updated:

A Mid-Michigan woman is in the fight of her life, but her family hopes the community will fight alongside her.

Nedra Brown is a wife and mother of two young children.

At 32 years old, she is also battling a terrible disease. She has cystic fibrosis. The respiratory disease has left Brown in bad shape. She weighs just 90 pound and has 19 percent lung capacity.

"It takes a lot of effort to breathe, to eat, to talk, to take a shower," she said.

Brown spends most of her time on the couch. Doctors fear pneumonia could set in and the early stages of kidney failure already have.

Brown is trying to get a double lung transplant that could save her life. The procedure itself costs about $800,000. Her health insurance covers 80 percent of the cost, leaving her thousands of dollars short. She's started a GoFundMe account, but hasn't had much luck. Now she's turning to TV5 viewers for help in an effort to help pay for the surgery.

"It would mean that I could clean the house and take care of my kids and be the mom that I was before I was so sick," Brown said.

As they wait for the possibility of this operation family members said they're exploring all options.

"I want to do everything I can to keep what she has going," said Denise Crittenden, Brown's mother.

She said her daughter's best odds of surviving are getting her own lungs up to 35 percent capacity.

"She actually has a better chance of living a longer life than what a lung transplant would do at this point. There is no guarantees either way," Crittenden said.

Whether it's a transplant, or medical treatments, both cost money, something this family said it doesn't have. Regardless of what happens, Brown said she's relying on her faith to get her through this illness.

"I don't want to leave my family. But I'm not scared. I trust in God and I know that he didn't give me babies to leave," Brown said.
