SAGINAW, MI (WNEM) -

The Saginaw Spirit honored those who have served and are serving our country during Military Appreciation Night at The Dow Event Center on Saturday, Nov. 1.

All veterans and active military received a complementary ticket to the hockey game.

Special guest speaker, Colonel Danny McKnight, participated in the ceremonial puck drop before the game.

Col. McKnight is a former U.S. Army Ranger Commander.  The movie Black Hawk Down is based on his command.

The Spirit team wore special military style jerseys during the game, which were later auctioned off.

Season ticket holders like, Ashley Phillips, said paying tribute to service members made it a special night.

“It's the most honorable and responsible thing, and I really appreciate that they do that for me.  Words can't even express how thankful I am,” said Phillips.

The annual Military Appreciation game was presented by the Bay City Elks Lodge #88

The Saginaw Spirit also walked away with a win.  The team defeated Sault Ste. Marie 5-4.
