A local teacher who accepted a plea deal after being accused of having sex with a student has been sentenced to 90-180 months behind bars.

Sarah Raymo, 32, was arrested for having sex with a 14-year-old student at the school and in her Essexville home.

Raymo pleaded guilty in September.

Douglas Newcombe, Bay City Public Schools superintendent, said school officials became aware of the improper contact in January and immediately reported it to police.

According to the Bay-Arenac ISD directory, Raymo was an English language arts intervention specialist.

In exchange for the guilty pleas, prosecutors agreed to dismiss four of the more serious charges against her.

"Considering everything, this is a horrendous crime," Judge Kenneth Schmidt said. "As a teacher you are placed in a position of trust over your students, and that trust was violated."

Raymo was arrested in January and later plead guilty to having sex with one of her 14-year-old middle school students.

"Ms. Raymo has done a very bad thing. She certainly understands that. She knows that," Defense attorney Matthew Reyes said.

Raymo's defense attorney made a last minute attempt to get her a reduced sentence. He said she had no prior criminal record and the student she had sex with initially made flirtatious advances towards her.

"That doesn't excuse Ms. Raymo from engaging in the activity that she did, but we ask that the court take all of those things into consideration," Reyes said during the sentencing.

The judge didn't go easy on Raymo. While Raymo sat visibly shaking in court, struggling to hold back her emotions, she was sentenced to a minimum of seven and half years behind bars.

"She can do up to 15 years in prison, but she has to do at least 90 months with her credit to be up for parole," said Nancy Borushko, chief assistant prosecutor.

Borushko said Raymo's punishment will help the victim and the community heal.

"For the community at large, I think this was a violation of their trust. With this work by the Bay City Public Safety department and through the sentencing today, I think they can feel a little bit safer," Borushko said.
