A Nativity scene on loan from Bronner's Christmas Wonderland is now on display at the Michigan Capitol building.

Michigan State Sen. Rick Jones spoke as a private citizen at the noon unveiling on the Capitol's East Lawn (Southside).

The Nativity was unveiled just days after a Satanic Temple announced it would erect its own display there this holiday season. The Michigan State Capitol Commission approved the Satanic display, which the Detroit-based group calls a Snaketivity Scene. It features a Satanic crucifix with the words “The Greatest Gift is Knowledge.”

On its Facebook page, the group states that, “just as the Nativity represents a mythology of the birth of Christ, the Snake is symbolic of the birth human enlightenment and liberation.”

The display, which depicts a snake wrapped around the Satanic cross and presenting a book as a holiday gift, will be featured on the northeast lawn at the Capitol from Dec. 21 through Dec. 23.

The Nativity will be on display until Dec. 25.

Both displays have to be taken down every night, and put back up in the morning.
