FLINT, MI (WNEM) - What started as a dispute over a stolen cell phone escalated to gunfire and police officers had to get involved.

The Flint Police Department is breathing a sigh of relief, as no officers were shot during the gunfight.

Everyone involved will be OK, but Flint Police Chief James Tolbert said the beef between the two families  involved is as ridiculous as it comes. An ongoing feud between two families over a stolen cell phone led to the shoot-out, police said.

"A $100 phone - or whatever it might have been - should never have gone this far to the point where we're driving around shooting at people, and it's just ridiculous," he said.

"Think about what could have happened here, it just, it makes me so upset that we resort to this type of violence," Tolbert said.

In January, the 14-year old victim tried to get his phone back and was beaten up. That's when police said the victim's family got involved.

Over the next month threats were made and police said on Monday those family members shot up a home on Orange Lane. Those in the home retaliated later that night.

Police got a call on Tuesday that there could be yet another incident at the home on Orange Lane.

"The only witness that could identify the suspects that shot up the home on Orange Lane refused to come in and cooperate," said Capt. Collin Bernie, with Flint police.

Police in an undercover car staked out the home. They said when a car pulled out of the driveway officers approached and the people inside began shooting at police. The police returned fire, striking one of the suspects. The other two suffered minor injuries. The three suspects are in jail.

"If that witness had come in there's a very good chance we would have stopped the whole incident from occurring," Bernie said.

Police are still investigating and no charges have been filed yet against those three. Police do have a person of interest in the drive-by in custody and are actively searching for another.
