Man convicted of swindling millions sentenced to prison

Posted: Updated:
BAY COUNTY, MI (WNEM) - A man convicted of swindling millions of dollars from Mid-Michigan residents was sentenced to prison on Friday.

Joel Wilson went before a judge Friday after being convicted last month for cheating investors out of their money. Wilson was found guilty on counts of racketeering and fraud. It took the jury more than a day to come to their decision.

More than 100 people said they became victims when they entrusted their money to Joel Wilson and his company The Diversified Group Advisory Firm LLC. Prosecutors argued that Wilson used the money for personal use.

He fled the country when the Attorney General began to investigate his business, and was extradited last year.

Federal investigators have seized all of Wilson's assets including about 60 real estate properties that Wilson owned in Michigan in order to recoup at least some of the investor's losses.

Wilson was sentenced to nine to 20 years in prison. He was also ordered to pay $6.5 million in restitution.
