Magic Johnson makes another visit to Mid-Michigan

Earvin "Magic" Johnson is back in town. He's raising money for the Saginaw Promise Scholarship Program.

It is designed to help students from Saginaw Public Schools go to college. Since its inception three years ago about 300 scholarships have been given out.

"Young people keep bringing me back to Saginaw. This is what it's all about. If you want to have a successful life and career and get a job one day you have to have a good education," Johnson said.

Johnson dropped the puck for Saturday night's Saginaw Spirit game against the Kitchener Rangers.

The organization is matching every dollar raised during the contest for the Saginaw Promise Scholarship Program. Team President Craig Goslin is proud to be a part of the fundraising effort.

"He's arguably one of the top ten athletes in the world over the last century. To have him here at the Dow Event Center at the Spirit game is really an honor for all of our fans," Goslin said.

Johnson, who was first in his family to go to college, tells us he plans to keep returning to the place he calls home .

Wanting others to have the same opportunity at a secondary education like he did.

"If you can be successful you need to come back and let the kids know and give them the blueprint on how you became successful so they feel they can do it too," Johnson said.
