Hausbeck Pickles continues growth in Saginaw

SAGINAW, MI (WNEM) -

Not many people think of Mid-Michigan produce when thinking about fast-food restaurants like Subway or Sonic.

However, most of them do indeed get their fruits and veggies from local growers like Hausbeck Pickle Company.

It's a local company that continues to grow. That's why the Great Lakes Bay Economic Club asked the owners of the Hausbeck Pickle Company to speak to its members on Monday.

"Through a lot of hard work, making good quality peppers and pickles, and never giving up," said Tim Hausbeck, owner.

That doesn't mean there hasn't been temptation to pick up and leave before.

"We've had opportunities to go elsewhere and we do whatever we can to make our company stronger every day," Hausbeck said.

He said despite those offers elsewhere, Hausbeck Pickles has chosen to plant roots in Saginaw.

"It's very exciting and really it helps the community as a whole as far as employment, people working, paying taxes," said Ken Kurecka, with the Great Lakes Bay Economic Club.

Kurecka is one of the board members with the economic club and is happy to see the local company do well.

In fact you probably have already eaten some of their pickles on a Whopper or Papa Johns' pizza.

"We hope to be the preferred global supplier of pickles and peppers," Hausbeck said.

Kurecka said that ambition speaks to the state of an improving local economy.

"It says the local workforce is meeting their needs. We have the trained quality people who can do the job for them. We have the infrastructure to support their business," Kurecka said.

While the business was started in the 1920s it really took off in 1980 with the contract to provide pickle slices to Burger King.
