No cable, no problem

SAGINAW, MI (WNEM) -

Americans are cutting the cable and opting for free TV. They're saving money and also getting all the major network affiliates like TV5. They're also getting special digital channels like MY5 that they can not get from satellite providers.

All you have to do is visit a store like your local Home Depot to pick up a digital antenna that's small and affordable ranging in price from $20 to more than $100.

"Hook it to the back of the TV and point it as close to where the broadcast system is and go from there," said John Reid, manager at Home Depot in Saginaw.

Reid brought us several options to show how easy it is, from ones you can mount outside your home to small inconspicuous ones that sit on a coffee table or hang on the wall.

"There's a couple screws that come with it so you can put it on the wall definitely. Near a window is recommended," Reid said.

Where you live will determine the type of antenna you need. The package tells you how many miles the antenna will reach. We created this map to show you what you will need to pick up MY5 TV from where our signal is broadcast.

For instance if you live in Bay City chances are you can get away with a cheaper indoor antenna. If you're in midland you may consider purchasing a stronger antenna with a higher range and if you're in Grand Blanc an outdoor antenna may work best.

Store bought antennas can range from 25 miles to over 100 miles. If you have a smart-phone you can scan the QR code on the antenna box to determine what stations you will get.

"The QR app on your smart phone you can scan it and you put your zip code in and it's going to tell you all the stations you are going to pick-up," Reid said.

Once you get it home attach it to your TV with the coaxial cable included with the antenna.

"You then want to grab your remote, hit menu, and go to settings, and tuner, and then autochannel scan, it's gonna start going through all the channels you have," Reid said.

Here's a tip, moving the antenna around the room might change which channels you receive.

If you opted for an outdoor antenna you can mount it to a post in your yard, to your roof or hang it in your attic and many of them come with a rotary control.

In just a matter of minutes you could be watching free TV and that includes our nightly 7 p.m. newscast on MY5 and our soon to launch 10 p.m. news also on MY5.

A simple antenna can produce the best picture you've ever seen on your TV because the high-definition signals are less compressed than through cable or satellite.
