Big conference addressing senior issues to be held in Mid-Michigan

Posted: Updated:

Elder care issues will be the focus of a big event in Mid-Michigan tomorrow. The Elder Advocacy and Law Boot Camp will be held in Grand Blanc.

The event will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Genesys Conference Center at 805 Health Park Blvd. and is designed for people involved in elder care issues.

Secretary of State Ruth Johnson announced through a news release that her office is participating in the boot camp. The Secretary of State's informational popup tent will provide information on senior driving as well as, the online, no-wait Secretary of State, and many other programs.

"Ten years ago, 14.5 percent of our drivers were 65 and older," Johnson said. "Today, it's 18.5 percent. And by 2030, we predict that 1 in 5 drivers will be over the age of 65. That means the Secretary of State's Office remains committed to ensuring that all drivers are able to operate a motor vehicle safely at any age."

"The Michigan Secretary of State's involvement in the Boot Camp will be a great help to those on the front line of providing care and assistance to Michigan's seniors," said event organizer Bob Mannor. "The social workers, nursing home administrators, medical personnel and others from the senior care community attending the Boot Camp will benefit from learning more about the secretary of state's continued commitment to the safety of senior drivers."

All drivers, regardless of age, must visit an office at least once every eight years to renew their license and have a vision screening. If necessary, a driver also may be required to be evaluated by a medical professional.
