Central Michigan University has been recognized for its recycling efforts with awards from the state of Michigan.

The Department of Environmental Quality and Governor's Recycling Council recently recognized CMU at the Governor's Recycling Summit in Kalamazoo. CMU was one of 28 honored at the event and one of only two universities recognized.

“Central Michigan University is recognized for excellence in Outreach and Education and receives the Institution Category Outreach and Education Award for their dedication to increasing awareness and promoting recycling throughout their campus,” said Bryce Feighner, chief of the DEQ's Office of Waste Management and Radiological Protection in a news release.

Facilities Management maintains numerous recycling containers, conducts orientation outreach events, participates in national competitions and conducts giveaways to promote awareness and participation.

"Our students lead the campus recycling effort," said Jay Kahn, director of facilities operations. "In 2014, CMU diverted 711.31 tons from landfills for a 31 percent diversion rate."

Last year, CMU was chosen for inclusion in "The Princeton Review's Guide to 332 Green Colleges: 2014 Edition." In collaboration with the Center for Green Schools at the U.S. Green Building Council, the fifth annual edition salutes the most environmentally responsible “green colleges.” CMU was one of 330 schools profiled in the U.S. and two in Canada that demonstrate exemplary commitments to sustainability in their academics, campus infrastructure, activities and career preparation. This was the second consecutive year CMU has been included in the guide.
