A group of Catholics are stepping up and helping out Flint residents.

FAITH in Flint is taking place on May 28 at 11 a.m. at the Center for Hope, 517 E. 5th Ave. in Flint. It's an initiative set up by the Catholic Diocese of Lansing.

At the event they will raise awareness of the plight of people in Flint, encourage prayer and volunteering for Catholic charities in Flint, and fight the impact of poverty in Flint, the group said in a press release.

The group said 62 percent of the children living in Flint live in poverty and 41 percent of Flint residents live in poverty.

The group also highlighted the crime and educational statistics in Flint.

Flint is considered the second most violent city in the country, the group said.

The group is hoping to demonstrate the love of Jesus Christ to those suffering from poverty, they said in a press release.
