Posted: Updated:
LANSING, MI (AP) - For two weekends this summer, off-road enthusiasts in Michigan can ride on state-designated routes and trails without a license or permit.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources has designated June 13-14 and Aug. 22-23 "free ORV weekends," when the usual license and trail permit requirements are waived. The policy also applies to public roads that are open to ORVs.

Michigan has more than 3,700 miles of designated ORV trails. Maps are available at .

Law enforcement agencies nationwide are emphasizing safe operation off all-terrain vehicles this week.

The DNR's list of safety tips includes riding only on designated trails and at a safe speed, making sure tires are inflated properly, avoiding paved roads and limiting riders to the number for which a vehicle is designed.
