If you're headed to the Upper Peninsula get ready for possible delays at the Mackinac Bridge. The State of Michigan reports as hardware and software upgrades are completed in toll lane booths on the Mackinac Bridge, customers may experience brief intermittent delays this week and next.

“While most of these changes are ‘behind the scenes' and shouldn't affect our customers as they cross the bridge, we have encountered some installation glitches that have resulted in delays at the toll booths,” said Mackinac Bridge Authority (MBA) Executive Secretary Bob Sweeney. “We hope to have those issues resolved shortly, and appreciate our customers' patience as we make these improvements.”

The first noticeable benefit of this new software will be the online availability of Mac Pass account information at www.mackinacbridge.org, followed by the ability for customers to use credit or debit cards in all lanes of the bridge. Additionally, Mac Pass account holders will be able to make deposits to their account online using credit cards, debit cards, or direct deposits from their banking institutions. Those upgrades should be fully implemented this summer.

The software upgrades, necessary because the current software will no longer be supported, are part of a coordinated update at the Mackinac Bridge, the International Bridge in Sault Ste. Marie, and the Blue Water Bridge in Port Huron. Credit cards are accepted at the bridge now, but only in the administration building.
