LANSING, MI (WNEM) -

Gov. Rick Snyder proclaimed Tuesday as Michigan Social Media Day.

Social Media Day is a globally recognized event that allows individuals to gather physically and virtually to celebrate the advancements of technology, Snyder said on Michigan's website.

Snyder added social media platforms have created a vibrant community for residents to communicate with each other throughout the world.

Snyder recognized sites such as Facebook, Twitter and YouTube as providing effective means of messaging and a more participatory government.

Michigan Social Media Day is a day to raise awareness of the importance of social media in governments, businesses and education institutions, Snyder said.
