Millington community volunteers in clean-up effort

SAGINAW, MI (WNEM) -

Volunteers in Millington, are still working on clean up a week after a tornado ripped through the community.

“We've been loading stuff up all day,” said Brian Skelly, a volunteer. “I've been going out with chainsaws, cutting trees, opening up people's homes.”

For Skelly, and so many others here in Millington, helping their neighbors get back on their feet comes naturally.

“For me, it's emotional,” Skelly said. “We pull up, they just start smiling, they come out, they're welcoming.”

Some areas still look like they haven't been touched. And, most of the residents without basic necessities like clothing, food or water.

That's why Pastor Dawn Richey at the Millington Church of the Nazarene started this effort.

“I had a lady come in, she said my house was hit, I'm not bad, but I need the help,” Richey said.

When the church put out the call to their community for donations for those impacted by the tornado, they had no idea how overwhelming the response would be. From clothes to food – it's like one big family.

“I have people coming in folding clothes, boxing up the goods to take out because they can't get out,” Richey said.

The community has come together and committed to working until the job is done.

“We're going to be here as long as possible. When they call, we'll go and do what we can,” Skelly said.
