Paralyzed man's wheelchair stolen, looking for help

Posted: Updated:

"Can you please bring my wheelchair back? Because I really need one."

That is the desperate plea from Guadalupe Rosas. His wheelchair was stolen Monday night off of his front porch, sometime between 10:30 p.m. and 11:00 p.m.

"For that to happen, it was shocking. It really was," said Theresa Nicholson, Rosas' mother.

Rosas is now left crawling around the the house. But this isn't the biggest obstacle Rosas has faced. In 2007, Rosas was shot in the head after driving away from a gas station.

"He spent two months in the Intensive Care Unit. He was on a ventilator a couple of times because he stopped breathing. He had seizures that he has never had before. He was also on a feeding tube and a treake," Nicholson said.

NIcholson contacted her insurance company who said her son's wheelchair may not be replaced. The wheelchair was just three weeks old.

"The next morning I contacted the medical supply store where he received the wheelchair and was told more than likely they were not going to pay for a new wheelchair," Nicholson said.

That's when family members contacted the WNEM TV5 Rescue Squad looking for help.

Neighbors said they're shocked something like this could happen in their neighborhood.

"I know that's his mode of transportation. That's how he gets back and fourth. To see somebody take that away is very disappointing," said Mike Shaler, a neighbor.

Despite everything that has happened, Guadalupe counts his blessings, thankful for the things he does have.

"I thank god everyday," Rosas said.

If you have any information, you're asked to call the Bridgeport Police Department at 989-777-2800.
