Officials say a maggot has been found in a food-preparation area at Alger Correctional Facility in Michigan's Upper Peninsula.
Corrections Department spokesman Chris Gautz says a prisoner reported finding the fly larva Wednesday before lunch near a slicer in a secure food-cutting area where inmates work. Gautz says the kitchen was closed the rest of the day and cleaned as a precaution.
Gautz says inmates were served bag lunches.
Philadelphia-based Aramark Correctional Services operates Michigan's prison food services and has been under scrutiny over food quality and worker conduct. Spokeswoman Karen Cutler notes Aramark workers don't have access to the area where the maggot was found.
Last year, officials discarded more than 4,000 pounds of potatoes at the prison after maggots were found in a shipment from a food supplier.
