SAGINAW TOWNSHIP, MI (WNEM) -

Saginaw Township police have released the identities of the two people killed in the car accident at Gratiot and Midland roads.

Christopher Todd Thompson, 74, and Mary Margaret Zimmerman, 73, died in a vehicle accident on Thursday afternoon in Saginaw Township. Thompson was the Thomas township trustee and Zimmerman was an arts booster.

The accident happened at the intersection of Gratiot and Midland Road about 12:30 p.m.

A Save-a-Lot semi truck was stopped in the turn lane on Gratiot Road, waiting to turn left on Midland Road when a car on Midland Road ran a red light and drove under the truck. The car was going 40 to 50 miles per hour, police said.

The car continued east bound through a parking lot and came to a stop behind an office building south of the intersection, police said.

The husband and wife in the car died as a result of the accident. The truck driver was not injured.

The area around State Street, St. Andrews and River Road will be closed for hours. Drivers should avoid the area.

The accident remains under investigation.
